Usk's Story

Usk's life started before he even hatched from his egg. From the very nest of his Crystalhide family in the Azim Steppe the egg was stolen without a trace. It quickly traveled through the Ruby Sea and beyond the ocean to be sold in Lominsa on the market as a rare gem of some kind. It passed between many hands, from market to market until it landed in the hands of a merchant that was taking it though the Dravanian Forelands with the goal to sell it to those living in the Hinterlands.However the merchant never got there, as he was stopped by a large mourning Dragon who could smell this 'Gem' was something else. This Dravanian Dragon had just lost their own eggs to mortals, so she decided she would take care of this lost little egg. She kept it warm and safe until the day came when it finally hatched, a small almost Drake-like Dragon from it.Usk was born into a family not of blood, but still Dragons. He was taken care of as if he was her own blood, and was happy. Though quickly he started to feel more and more hungry over the years, the meat hunted for him was never enough. He needed more, and quickly learned to hunt on his own small prey to get himself more food. Each day the prey he hunted got bigger, but even then he was still hungry.His wild hunger and building violence drove him away from other Dragons, as he was seen as a danger to both himself and others. Yet he didn't care, he had his mother and he would keep hunting so he didn't need other Dragons to be his friends.Though with Nidhogg's angered calls it wasn't long before even his mother was forced to answer them, leaving him alone to fend fully for himself. With a heavy heart he moved away from the other Dravanian Dragons, lashing out unless he heard the roars for a fight. Any fight would end up being a meal, no matter if it was one of his fellow Dragons, a beast, or a mortal. Everything was a meal to him, and his mind focused only on his next meal.He moved to the outskirts of Dravania, and the more into Western Highlands of Coerthas, becoming one of the great dangers to Ishgard. His now blood red scales got him the name of The Red Death, and the people feared him when his name was spoken. He would show up to large fights, small fights, as long as he could smell blood.Though one day the smell of blood led Usk to something new, something that seemed familiar. A seemingly mortal locked up that smelled more like a Dragon, like him. He killed all that was around her, and set her free but soon ran away from the strange but familiar smell that his mind yelled about. Alone later his mind gave him the word, "family" when trying to understand the smell. He didn't get to lose track of the smell for long, as the one holding the smell found him soon enough, demanding to know who he was and why he smelled like family.He learned after this person's name was Kailana and they really were a Crystalhide in the form of a mortal species known as an Au Ra. Usk didn't trust her, but slowly ended up accepting her around to learn how to change his form and to learn draconic to be able to talk to his sister better. His sister worked to explain what he really was, and how he needed to stop eating meat. That his meat diet was going to kill him, that it was no better than eating sugar his whole life. Still Usk wasn't willing to give up and barely ate any of the rocks that his sister would try to get him to eat.Life for a while was this mess of trying to learn and work with each other, while exploring the world around them. Usk accepted Kailana as his sister and learned about what species he really was. However it was not to last, as the calamity tore the two siblings apart.Usk himself took to the skies during the Calamity, hoping to find a hint of his sister out in the waves. However he only got hit by one of the many falling flaming rocks and thrown into the tumbling waters. The last he remembers of that night was sinking and a very large eye looking at him.He woke up on the ship called The Deep owned by someone named Mizuchi who was very much not human. He soon learned this person was a sea serpent holding onto a rather large Au ra form. He could only expect they were the one they saw under the water, and for a while he stayed with the crew to heal and work. Seeing as he had no clue if his sister survived this was better than nothing.This time with the crew helped him get more used to being around mortals or at least mortals that lived around Limsa Lominsa. He did have the hardest time understanding them all, as he was still learning common but he learned enough to get by. His control over his Au ra form became so well he was able to make himself smaller than most Au ras. He still let his red scales show though, enjoying the way they would shine when light hits them.When he finally did leave the crew, he returned to exploring the land. He ended up working for the scions for only a short time when he found his sister again. He however didn't stick around long with them, finding he didn't really enjoy working for the good of them. He enjoyed the fights with primals but not the feeling of the primal itself trying to control him. Honestly he is not even sure why he didn't get controlled like many others, but he chalks it up to not being mortal.He didn't get to know any of the main people in the scions and would only answer a call for him to help in a fight. This however didn't last long as the scions broke up on their own and together with his sister they went to Ishgard.Here he was only reminded of what he had been only years ago, it was just as cold and unforgiving as he remembered. It was only his sister that was able to get them both in the city. It didn't stop his feeling of bitter anger that lived in his heart. The people here didn't seem like they should have been saved but that wasn't his choice.He went hunting more often, and soon the both of them ended back in Dravania. His home, even if it didn't feel like it anymore. While other Dragons remembered him, they did not remember him positively and his adopted mother was nowhere to be seen. He simply followed the flow of his anger, and followed the fight like he used to. Old habits returning like the wave returns to the ocean.He could feel the rage of Nidhogg and even if he was never blood related, he lived for so long around the brood it was hard to not still be affected by the song. He ended up leaving before the Dragonsong world ended, and refused to listen to any news about the fight itself. He kept away from the fights of mortals, and returned to working around Limsa and greeting the crew he became friends with. Was he running away from pain and hate? Yes but for once he didn't want to hurt, didn't want to kill those he knew.He only finally moved when he got word that his sister had been hurt in battle in Gyr Abania, and went to her side. He refused to help too much with the war there, but he would keep wild monsters off of the people that his sister wanted to help. Though he did end up killing anyone who also attacked him, not giving any mercy to those who hurt his sister.When the fight became a stalemate he took that time to return his sister to a safer area, to get done healing. Only to be asked by her to go to Kugane with the crew he made friends with. They needed more hands for the supplies they were transferring and he needed to get away. He believed his sister would be fine now after all.Kugane was too new of a place for him to stay for long, and he quickly followed his urge to explore the Ruby Sea. Here he felt like he was following a path he went long ago, each step pulling him towards something. The waters of the sea clean his scales from the blood of war, making them shine in the sun yet again.Further still he found The Azim Steppe, and the plains felt warm and open to him. Something in his mind wanted to call his home, and with what his sister had long told him ago, it would have been his home. He knows his blood family didn't stay in the Steppe after his egg was stolen, but that didn't stop the feeling.Fighting here was done for enjoyment and the meat dishes made were the best he ever tasted. The night sky calmed him down in a way he never knew, but he couldn't stay here. He decided to keep exploring the world, and while he would sometimes help people he thought deserved it he still kept a bit of distance from getting too involved in fights that weren't just hunting.While he didn't know if his life was still one worth living, he would keep living it.
